| | Comments (0)

Webnames.ca was a proud Communications Sponsor of the 2011 BCNET Conference. The event took place over two days, May 3rd and 4th in Vancouver, BC and was a great success. Webnames.ca Director John Demco was on the Board of Directors of BCNET from 1996-2001, and was in attendance last week and shared a breakdown of the 2011 Conference.

  • The keynote addresses by Steve Dotto on the impact of technology across generations and by Dr. Geordie Rose of D-Wave Systems on existential threats and computing technology were informative, thought-provoking and well executed
  • Attendees learned about a provincial shared datacentre set up on behalf of the Province of British Columbia for use by public sector and private clients that is now up and running with sites in Kamloops, BC and Calgary, Alberta
  • The subject of national and regional advanced networks in Canada and the USA was addressed
  • Email solutions, both in-house and in the cloud, was a topic of note
  • Other topics of note included network architecture and design across B.C.'s campuses and shared green datacentre services for B.C.'s research intensive campuses
A particularly interesting session was the BCNET Digital Media Challenge, a student competition showing the interaction of digital media with advanced digital infrastructure. Live presentations were judged by a panel of digital media experts using these evaluation criteria: innovation, network utilization, creativity, and presentation and entertainment value. Entries included web-based secure monitoring, adaptive scalable video streaming over HTTP, collection and characterization of BCNET BGP traffic, and Puppetier--a remote control glove. The winning presentation was by Andrew Au of Simon Fraser University on "Veaver - An Interactive Multiview Video System", which can weave together videos captured by multiple cameras at the same scene but from different viewpoints.

You can view some the PowerPoint presentations online at the Conference Website. Live recording of the presentations should also be available soon. The conference was very well organized and continues to be one of the premier Canadian networking conferences. Webnames.ca is delighted to be involved and we look forward to participating in future conferences.
