TEDxCapU_black-small.gifOn Saturday, November 5th , Cybele Negris, Webnames' President, will be a speaker at the TEDxCapU.  Cybele's talk will address technology in an event themed: R U READY?, that is all about the impact of change on business.

"The speed of change in Technology, Expectations, Demographics is frustrating, challenging, exciting and resource-consuming! Change also presents OPPORTUNITY.  How are we small and medium sized business owners choosing to embrace change and seize opportunity? How are our actions directly impacting the future of our success?"

These are the questions and ideas that will be addressed by Cybele and a fascinating panel of speakers from diverse areas with two speakers addressing each topic: technology, expectations and demographics.

TED is a non-profit devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading". It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.

Created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading," the TEDx (x=independent) program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all TEDx events have several features in common.

•    TED's celebrated format: A suite of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances (live, or just TEDTalks videos from TED.com) on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder -- and to provoke conversations that matter
•    TEDTalks videos: A minimum of two pre-recorded talks from the acclaimed TEDTalks video series (these talks are available free on TED.com)
•    Bias-free programming: Lack of any commercial, religious or political agenda

Only 100 tickets will be sold for this event.  Come join 384 of Vancouver's movers and shakers, entrepreneurs, business leaders and distinguished guests as they come together to share ideas, uncover possibilities and stretch brains.  The nine incredible speakers will be framed with TED Talks, live music, art and networking.  Thousands more will participate via live streaming, Twitter and website access.

Webnames.ca was a proud Communications Sponsor of the 2011 BCNET Conference. The event took place over two days, May 3rd and 4th in Vancouver, BC and was a great success. Webnames.ca Director John Demco was on the Board of Directors of BCNET from 1996-2001, and was in attendance last week and shared a breakdown of the 2011 Conference.
.
bcnet-logo.gifHere are highlights from a sampling of the many sessions that took place during the Conference:

  • The keynote addresses by Steve Dotto on the impact of technology across generations and by Dr. Geordie Rose of D-Wave Systems on existential threats and computing technology were informative, thought-provoking and well executed
  • Attendees learned about a provincial shared datacentre set up on behalf of the Province of British Columbia for use by public sector and private clients that is now up and running with sites in Kamloops, BC and Calgary, Alberta
  • The subject of national and regional advanced networks in Canada and the USA was addressed
  • Email solutions, both in-house and in the cloud, was a topic of note
  • Other topics of note included network architecture and design across B.C.'s campuses and shared green datacentre services for B.C.'s research intensive campuses
A particularly interesting session was the BCNET Digital Media Challenge, a student competition showing the interaction of digital media with advanced digital infrastructure. Live presentations were judged by a panel of digital media experts using these evaluation criteria: innovation, network utilization, creativity, and presentation and entertainment value. Entries included web-based secure monitoring, adaptive scalable video streaming over HTTP, collection and characterization of BCNET BGP traffic, and Puppetier--a remote control glove. The winning presentation was by Andrew Au of Simon Fraser University on "Veaver - An Interactive Multiview Video System", which can weave together videos captured by multiple cameras at the same scene but from different viewpoints.

You can view some the PowerPoint presentations online at the Conference Website. Live recording of the presentations should also be available soon. The conference was very well organized and continues to be one of the premier Canadian networking conferences. Webnames.ca is delighted to be involved and we look forward to participating in future conferences.

March 24th, 2011 marked the 4th year for YVR Twestival, where Webnames.ca was a proud sponsor.

What is Twestival? Here is a brief history from the Twestival official website:

Twestival® (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good by connecting communities offline on a single day to highlight a great cause and have a fun event. Twestival is the largest global grassroots social media fundraising initiative to date. Since 2009, volunteers have raised close to $1.2 million for 137 nonprofits. All local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects.
Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but work from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact. Over 200 international cities from Buenos Aires to Bangalore, Seattle to Seoul and Hong Kong to Honolulu have participated in Twestival.

This year's Twestival in Vancouver took place at the Vancouver Lookout on Friday March 24th, 2011. The purpose of the night was to raise funds in support of Beauty Night Society, a non-profit Canadian organization that builds self esteem and changes lives of women and youth living in poverty through three streams of programs: wellness, life skills development and makeovers.

The energy at The Vancouver Lookout was wonderful, as everyone was coming together for the great cause. There were many wonderful sponsors for the evening and Mayor Gregor Robertson even stopped in to make a speech and praised the organizers for such a great event.

Webnames was a proud sponsor of the night, supplying .tel cards for all the swag bags handed out at the end of the night to all attendees.

The event was a huge success, raising over $8,000 for Beauty Night! Globally the Twestivals raised over $300,000 for their respective charities! Great job to everyone involved.

At the CIF you can provide your feedback and opinions about the results of these consultations. There will be opportunity to ask questions, debate and have your opinion heard about the direction the Internet should take in Canada.

There will also be a panel of Canadian experts on hand to discuss and debate the future of the Internet, including:

Canary Derby's Top Fundraiser 3rd Year Running

| | Comments (0)

Thank you to all those who participated, volunteered and came out to Saturday's Canary Derby at Deer Lake Park. With the weather reports calling for rain all week, we didn't know how the event would shape up, but the skies parted and we ended up having gorgeous summer weather for what turned out to be an amazing day of soapbox car racing!

I would also like to thank our exceptional pit crew Mathieu, Rami, Max, Adrien, Steve and especially to Hannah our fearless driver (bruised spine and all!). That fist up in the air as she crossed the finish line will be etched in my memory forever. Webnames.ca took 3rd place out of 14 teams at the Canary Derby this year, beating out the SFU Mechatronics team, the Telus (built also by Mechatronics) team and Rogers, who had their soapbox car designed and/or built (at least in part) by the local Vancouver Porche dealership. Porche, you may want to think about sponsoring us next year instead!

Our success at the 2010 Canary Derby would not have been possible without all of people supported our fundraising initiatives this year, helping to put our Webnames.ca team at the top of the fundraising category for a 3rd year in a row.  Beating out larger companies like Telus and Rogers, Webnames.ca passed its goal of $15,000 to raise an impressive $16,000 plus for the cause!

Thank you to our generous top donors/supporters:

Amuse consulting
Borden Ladner Gervais
Canadian Internet Registration Authority
Edigx Conference

E-xact Transactions
Miles Employment Group
McNeill Nakamoto
October 17 Media
Rami Films

And the Webnames.ca Fundraising team:

Tamara Brooks
Brenda Cadman
Andre Darche
John Demco
David Hall
Julianna Horvat
Garrett Saundry
Lindsay Smith
Stephen Smith
Adrien Trumpy
Hannah Wise

All of the funds raised go to support the Canary Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the goal of identifying cancer early through a simple blood test and then isolating it with imaging.

As well, I cannot forget those who stayed behind to lend a hand in breakdown and cleanup. I saw Julianna and Hannah stacking the tires that lined the racecourse and I worked hard with John, Mathieu and some others in putting away the tires and fencing. By the end of the event we were not only exhausted, but also covered in dirt, grime and soon to be nursing sore muscles.

We were lucky enough to have Rami Films out filming again this year, so be on the lookout for photos and video coming to our Facebook and YouTube pages soon.  Thank you Rami for filming the event and I can't wait to see the great images you were able to capture!

For those who are interested in the final results and how everyone placed in the various events on the day, here they are:

Canary Style/Obstacle Race: Team Xomo & Big Green placed first with their Top Gun inspired car. The fly boys performed a classic rendition of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," giving Goose and Maverick a run for their money. Placing second was The Waterboys from Aquatic Informatics with their larger than life aquarium. Team Telus placed third with a great showing of fans and support.

Canary Speed Category: The Waterboys defended their championship and placed first with a time of 36.26 seconds; Highway to HTML from Work at Play placed second with 38.14 seconds; and a very close third went to Webnames.ca with 38.20 seconds.

Top Fundraiser: That was us! Webnames.ca brought in $16,701 through team fundraising and corporate sponsorship. Telus raised $9,000 thanks to their team fundraising and corporate sponsorship. Aquatic Informatics raised $5,285, raising funds up to the last minute in the parking lot. Great effort all around!

I hope all of you had a wonderful time because we're going to do it again... only bigger and better next year!
