The IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (ICG) met in London last week. The group is responsible for preparing a proposal to the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Adminstration (NTIA) for transitioning NTIA’s stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to the Internet community. The IANA functions can be divided into three main categories: domain names, number resources, and other protocol parameters. The group produced a draft charter and discussed a draft timeline for development of the transition proposal. A statement from the first meeting was published.

Who owns your domain name?http://blog.webnames.ca/who-owns-your-domain-name/ http://blog.webnames.ca/who-owns-your-domain-name/#comments Thu, 03 Jul 2014 19:43:20 +0000 http://blog.webnames.ca/?p=6952 Who owns your domain name?

Recently, I have taken over the role of the webmaster for a local community group. Initially, my job was just to keep the website up and running smoothly as well as upload new content once and a while. I never expected to learn that no one in my group knew where the domain name was registered or who had access to manage the domain. Do you know who owns your domain name?

ICANN meetings take place this week in London, with more than 2000 people in attendance. Here are a few of the topics to be discussed:

  • The new gTLD program, and especially the .wine and .vin top-level domain applications, continue to draw much attention. ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) has not reached consensus on additional safeguards for .wine/.vin; however, some individual government representatives, including those from France and the European Commission, are pressing very strongly. In a recent letter, ICANN Chair Steve Crocker stated that ICANN has continued with the processing of the applications, but would welcome any additional advice from the GAC on the issue, and would also take into account the resolving of the issues in other global trade fora such as the WTO.
