Security Notice: Phishing Emails Targeting Webnames.ca Customers

phishing alert

We have recently become aware of a round of phishing emails targeting Webnames.ca customers. This has coincided with an uptick in phishing, fraudulent and scam emails industry wide and is not unique to Webanmes.ca or domain registrars.

The emails we wish to draw attention to appears to come from “Webnames.ca Support” however utilize a non-Webnames email address. The phishing emails also includes a subject line similar to one of the following:

  • Subscription Issue – Please Review
  • Action required: Please confirm your contact info
  • Action Required – Update Your Payment Details
  • Renewal Error – Please Resolve
  • Your Password Has Been Reset
  • COMPLETED: Sign and Complete Authorization Certificate For Today

Please note that scammers are sophisticated and may change sending addresses and/or subject lines, so be vigilant to review the sender information carefully.

These emails are NOT legitimate. Please do not click any links or provide any information.

What You Should Do (and Not Do)

  • Do not click any links in the email
  • Do not enter your login credentials or any personal information.
  • If you clicked the link or entered your credentials: Immediately change your Webnames.ca account password [Reset your password here].
  • Contact our support team to review your account for any suspected unauthorized activity. Don’t hesitate. Remember, you can always speak to one of our support team members by calling our toll-free number.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your account if you haven’t already. This adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access. [Learn how to enable 2FA here].

Additional Protection for SSO Users

If you log in to Webnames.ca using Google or Microsoft Single Sign-On (SSO) please note:

  • You are not affected by this phishing attempt
  • Your Webnames.ca account does not use a separate password, so no password update is necessary or possible
  • SSO provides an additional layer of protection against phishing and credential theft
  • However, please remain cautious—phishing websites may still attempt to trick you into entering your Google or Microsoft credentials. Always verify the URL before logging in and avoid clicking suspicious links

How to Stay Safe

Keep secure by always following these guidelines if you suspect fraud, or if you have the sense that anything is off in an email you receive:

Always verify the sender’s email address carefully
Fraudulent emails often come from addresses that look similar but are slightly off—like using extra characters, misspellings, or strange domains. Double-checking the sender before acting on an email helps you spot scams before they cause harm.

Remember we will never ask you to confirm sensitive information via third-party links
Phishing emails frequently include urgent-sounding requests with links to fake login pages. Webnames.ca will never ask you to update or confirm sensitive information this way. If you see such a request, treat it as suspicious.

When in doubt, visit our website directly by typing “www.webnames.ca” directly into your browser.
Rather than clicking links in emails, the safest option is to go straight to our site by typing the URL yourself. This ensures you are on the official Webnames.ca website, not a fraudulent imitation.

Enable 2FA in your account settings to help secure your login.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) makes it much harder for attackers to access your account, even if they manage to obtain your password. It only takes a few minutes to set up and provides an important safeguard against phishing attempts.

One of your best defenses when it comes to protecting yourself from email and online fraud is always simply trusting your instincts. If an email or webpage feels “off” – whether it’s the tone of the message, awkward grammar, unusual punctuation, or low-quality images and logos – pause, review, contact support before clicking or responding. These small but telling signs are often red flags of a fraudulent email. Slowing down and questioning anything that doesn’t look or sound right can help you avoid falling victim to a scam.
