Top 10 Domain Sales of 2008

To start this year I thought it would be interesting to look back at 2008 and see which were the top domain names sold (by dollar value) and for how much.

The following are the top 10 domain name sales and how much they were sold for in US dollars.

Domain Name

Sold For ($US)

Fund.com

$9,999,950

DataRecovery.com

$1,659,000

Kredit.de

$1,169,175

Cruises.co.uk

$1,099,798

Invest.com

$1,015,000

SkiResorts.com

$850,000

Printer.com

$800,000

iReport.com

$750,000

Casino.de

$625,060

Jobs.ca

$600,000

As usual a .com domain name is on top of that list. .com domain names continue to gain in value every year. Over 75 million .com domains are now registered, which means the majority, if not the entirety, of valuable .com domain names have been registered. It is no surprise that a four-letter domain name like fund.com sold for US $9,999,950.

What I find the most interesting this year is that there are four non-.com domain names in the top 10. For the first time  a .ca made it on the top 10 list which to me is an indicator that the general value of .ca is on the rise now that over 1,000,000 .ca domains have been registered.

Other notable .CA sales in 2008 are:

Jobs.ca $600,000
Cv.ca $54,977
Banks.ca $41,000
Interview.ca $30,933
GMX.ca $31,015
Income.ca $26,242
Lesbian.ca $20,400
Espresso.ca $18,000
Diploma.ca $17,999

Last year only one non-.com made it to the top 10 list and it was poker.de. This year there are two .de domain names in the top 10.

So my question is: what is in store for 2009? Will a .ca sell for over $1,000,000? Are we going to see many more domain extensions on the list? Will something other than a .com take first place?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in 2009!
