ICANN Meeting in Mexico City Concludes – ICANN meetings were held in Mexico City on March 1-6. Sessions on new gTLDs, IDN ccTLDs, the structure of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), DNSSEC, IPv4 and IPv6, e-crime and abuse of the DNS, and a number of other topics took place. Among the announcements and resolutions were the following:
- ICANN President and CEO Paul Twomey announced that he will move on from ICANN at the end of 2009.
- Preliminary reports on competition and pricing, as related to the introduction of new gTLDs, were published.
- The ICANN Board resolved to create an Implementation Recommendation Team to “develop and propose solutions to the overarching issue of trademark protection in connection with the introduction of new gTLDs”.
- The country code registries of Germany (.de), Italy (.it), Belgium (.be), Slovenia (.si), Lithuania (.lt) and Croatia (.hr) have joined ICANN’s country code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO).
