Is your website ready for the mobile phone?

There are a few reasons why “there’s an app for that” will be the expression du jour when talking about mobile phones and the internet.

Websites that have Flash elements are very slow to render on flash enabled phones such as the Motorola Razr and in the mobile phone world, time actually is money.

Even if Flash were not a problem, the screen real estate for viewing websites is small

For some websites, having a .mobi/WAP version might resolve the problem but for large companies like crocs.com do they really want to pay someone to do a new site that may not give any reasonable ROI?

Whereas for a company like MTV, doing a WAP version of their website does make sense as they can offer small bites of information and sell ringtones that are purchased via ones phone bill – you can’t buy funky plastic sandals that way !

A recent post on the Telnic community forum suggested:  “In a world that just has hosted websites (.com, .ca etc) statistics show that people usually visit a website once for content and then visit it another thousand times just to get contact information.”

I imagine this is probably true for restaurants (I can never remember where they are) and other brick and mortar retail operations.  And probably large corporations – like Mining companies – I hit Riotinto.com once for info but any other time would be to get their address and see it on a Google map as I have to meet a friend who works there for lunch.

.tel, with its bare bones design works well in either an app or in the mobile phone browser (it looks like Craigslist on the iPhone web browser – I ♥ Craigslist).

Howard from Telnic, put it this way: “Accessing a .tel name is extremely quick, very low cost when roaming or on a pay-as-you-go contract and assures you are only downloading information you are specifically looking for, not extraneous code which eats up your data allowance”.

So the .tel service saves time and money for the phone owner as they don’t have to trawl through Google search results or navigate through heavy corporate websites for their address and phone number.

.TEL names are cheap to buy, fast to set up and give a better end user experience to frustrated mobile phone users who just want to know what time you close on Wednesday night.
