ICANN Board Approves New Registry Agreement – The ICANN Board, through its New gTLD Program Committee (NGPC), has approved a new Registry Agreement [PDF]. The agreement will be used as the basis for all new gTLD registry contracts. As noted in the press release [PDF], agreement provisions include: a Trademark Clearinghouse where trademark holders can protect their rights, an efficient process to take down infringing names, a per-registry point of contact for handling abuse complaints, and requirements to support DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and an enhanced WHOIS service. Together with the recently adopted 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement, ICANN now has the contract tools in place to commence the New gTLD contracting process.
ICANN to Meet Next Week in Durban, South Africa – ICANN is meeting on July 14-18 in Durban, South Africa, with a number of pre-meeting events taking place beforehand. Various aspects of the New gTLD Program will figure prominently in the discussions. Some other topics are: “thick” WHOIS services for all gTLD registries, the design of a next generation aggregated registration data service (ARDS) to eventually replace the WHOIS model, and ICANN’s five-year strategic planning process.
