ICANN Prohibits the Use of Dotless Domains – ICANN has prohibited the use of dotless domains in the New gTLD Program. A dotless domain consists of a single label, e.g. “http://example” or “user@example”. The decision follows the publication of an ICANN-commissioned study (the “Carve Report“), a 2012 report by ICANN’s Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC), and a recent statement by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). One of the proposed new gTLDs affected by this decision is Google’s .search application.
