ICANN Meeting in Buenos Aires – ICANN’s 48th public meeting wrapped up last week in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Two of the main themes were the New gTLD Program and Internet governance.

New gTLD Program progress was outlined in a report dated November 18 covering
application processing, rights protection mechanisms, name collision, and
other topics. The report indicates that 24 new gTLDs have been delegated.
However, that number is already out of date: ICANN maintains an up-to-date
list of delegated strings which has grown to 31 as of this writing. Many other sessions addressed specific aspects of the Program in detail.

Much effort was focused on Internet governance. Following many questions from
ICANN’s supporting organizations, advisory committees and others, a special
session was added to the meeting schedule in order to discuss an upcoming multistakeholder conference to be held in Brazil, a new initiative called 1net which is open to all, and a panel on the future of Internet governance.
