Canary Derby Crashes Caught on Film

As some of you might already know, Webnames.ca participated in this year’s
Canary Derby race to raise funds for early detection of cancers. Since I had
fun filming the event last year in Gastown, I volunteered again this year.
When I heard the race course was much steeper than last year, I got all
excited to film the derby cars zooming by at new speeds. I did not expect to
capture footage of the first 3 cars either losing a wheel or flipping over
completely. Thankfully no one was seriously injured…good thing everyone
was wearing a helmet.

I present to you “The Canary Derby crashes” featuring the Cisco, ACL and FLV
teams

If you have friends who don’t wear helmets, send them the link.

  1. Ha! I just wish that my battery held more charge when our cart (Polycom) crashed in test runs. Unfortunately we were not able to get it into race shape in time for the Derby so we had to withdraw.
One major difference with our cart is that it did NOT lose any wheels in the accident. No, indeed the wheels stayed firmly attached and thus were horribly bent. It probably also helped our cart to acquire as much altitude as it did during the roll over wherein at one point the drivers head was three feet above the road as he hurtled at speed sideways dangling from an upside-down racing machine.
He popped his shoulder and lost a finger nail in that – but all we have of the thrilling spectacle are rather alarming memories.

  2. BTW, in the crash run of the bee cart, halfway down the track a man wanders out onto the track. A volunteer in a yellow shirt shepherds him back off the track. I was the guy in the yellow shirt.
