ICANN Edges Forward On New gTLDs, .XXX – Meeting in Cartagena, Columbia, the ICANN Board made progress on a number of issues, but did not finalize the launches of either the new gTLD program or the .xxx domain. An extended meeting with the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) is planned.
Concerning new gTLDs, the Board noted that a number of issues have been addressed including trademark protection, mitigating malicious contact, root zone scaling, and economic analysis, and that further public comment will be taken into account. The Board resolved to meet with the GAC in February, 2011 to address the GAC’s outstanding concerns including geographic names, and morality and public order objections.
Concerning the .XXX domain application, the Board determined that it intends to enter into a registry agreement with ICM Registry, subject to GAC consultation and advice. The ICANN Board and the GAC will consult on this during their February, 2011 meetings.
