ICANN Board and Governmental Advisory Committee To Meet Over gTLD Differences – ICANN’s Board of Directors and its Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) meet in Brussels Monday and Tuesday in an attempt to resolve remaining issues with the new gTLD process as identified by the GAC. Topics include: objection procedures, root zone scaling, market and economic impacts, registry-registrar separation, protection of rights owners (trademark protections), consumer protection issues (malicious conduct), law enforcement due diligence recommendations, post delegation disputes with governments, geographic names (use and protection of geographical names), legal recourse for applicants, and providing opportunities for all stakeholders. The meeting will be webcast.
U.S. Government Requests Comments on the IANA Functions – The U.S. Department of Commerce has issued a Request For Comments on enhancing the performance of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions. Two of these functions are: Internet DNS root zone management, and the allocation of Internet numbering resources. The IANA contract, which expires on September 30, 2011, is presently held by ICANN and is a cornerstone of its authority. This is the first comprehensive review of the contract since 2000.
