CIRA to Host Canadian Internet Forum – The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will host the Canadian Internet Forum (CIF) in Ottawa on February 25. At the forum, CIRA will present findings from a national consultation on how the Internet is run, experts will comment on the findings, and participants will discuss Canadian and international Internet governance. - At its meeting on January 25, the ICANN Board triggered consultations between the Board and the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), as provided for in the ICANN Bylaws. The bylaws specify a process to be followed in the event that “the ICANN Board determines to take an action that is not consistent with the Governmental Advisory Committee advice”. The ICANN Board is triggering this mechanism for both the new gTLDs and for the longstanding .xxx domain application.
- According to a posting in the Internet Governance Project blog, the US Commerce Department is proposing to the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) that the GAC should be able to veto any new TLD application, by upholding an objection raised by any GAC member for any reason.
- The ICANN Board has approved a request from .tel registry operator Telnic to allow numeric-only domain names in .tel, excluding single-digit names.
