ICANN Anticipates New gTLD Applications to Start in Q1 of 2010 – ICANN has provided an update on the new gTLD Program, and anticipates “that applications for new top-level domains will be accepted starting in the first quarter of 2010.” Consultations and discussion, including sessions at the Sydney meeting in June, will continue on the four previously identified overarching issues: trademark protection, root zone scaling, potential for malicious conduct, and TLD demand and economic analysis.
EU Official Calls for Fully Privatized, Independent ICANN – In a video message (PDF version here) on May 4, Viviane Reding, Information Society and Media Commissioner of the European Commission, has called for a “fully privatised and fully independent ICANN” to evolve upon the expiry of the agreement between ICANN and the U.S. Government on September 30. Reding also calls for a “G-12 for Internet Governance”, an informal, geographically balanced group of government representatives to make recommendations to ICANN.
