Internet Governance Forum Meeting This Week in Rio de Janeiro – The Internet Governance Forum is meeting this week in Rio de Janeiro. Themes of the meeting include access, diversity, openness, and security. Also, the theme of critical Internet resources, including the management of resources such as the DNS and IP addressing, is expected to figure prominently in the discussions. NTIA Seeks Comments on ICANN Agreement – The National Telelecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has issued a Notice of Inquiry requesting comments as part of the midpoint review of its three-year agreement with ICANN signed on September 29, 2006. Specifically, the NTIA is seeking comments on “the continued transition to the private sector of the technical coordination and management of the Internet’s domain name and addressing system (DNS).”
ICANN To Begin Registrar Data Escrow Program – Iron Mountain is to provide escrow services under ICANN’s Registrar Data Escrow (RDE) program. All ICANN-accredited registrars must regularly deposit a backup copy of their gTLD registration data with an approved RDE provider. The data held in escrow from a failed or terminated registrar may be released to ICANN to facilitate transfer of domain registrations to another registrar.
