Significant Progress On Internationalized Domain Names At ICANN Seoul Meetings – At its meetings in Seoul, South Korea, the ICANN Board of Directors approved an implementation plan for introducing internationalized domain names (IDNs) as Internet top-level domains (TLDs). This fast-track process is for the introduction of a limited number of IDN TLDs associated with two-letter country codes. The process will be launched on November 16.

Also, many of the ICANN meeting sessions concerned the introduction of new gTLDs. Of particular note is that the Board directed staff to study the potential impact of a call for formal ‘expressions of interest‘ in new gTLDs. Such a call could provide “important information about the level of interest in the program and likely strings to be applied for”.

Information about all of the meeting sessions is available at the ICANN Seoul website.
