Domain Name Registrations Top 240 Million Worldwide – According to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief published by VeriSign, the second quarter of 2012 ended with more than 240 million domain names registered worldwide, an annual growth of more than 25.5 million or 11.9%. The annual growth as reported three months ago was 23 million or 11%. Total ccTLD registrations were 100.3 million, a 18.5% annual increase. The ten largest domains are: .com, .de (Germany), .net, .tk (Tokelau), .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .info, .nl (Netherlands), .ru (Russian Federation), and .cn (China). Notably, the .tk domain moved from seventh to fourth place, and .cn replaced .eu at tenth place.

ICANN Meets Next Week in Toronto – ICANN is meeting next week in Toronto, with some pre-meeting events taking place as early as Friday, October 12. The new gTLD program will be discussed during the week, as well as other topics including security, risk management, the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, the Trademark Clearinghouse, Uniform Rapid Suspension, and WHOIS. Remote participation will be available for many sessions.

Nominet Proposes New .UK Registration Service – Nominet, registry for the .uk domain, has begun a consultation on the possibility of accepting .uk domain registrations at the second level, e.g. yourdomain.uk. The service would include verification of the registrant’s UK contact details, malware monitoring and notification, and mandatory use of DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC).
