CNNIC, the sponsoring organization for .cn has announced some new registration rules.
CNNIC became aware that many of the .cn names being registered were being used for nefarious purposes – fake banking sites, malware and phishing sites and lots and lots of porn.
So in an effort to stop the .cn extension being abused by the bad guys, they have implemented a paper based registration process in addition to the online registration process.
They believe that this will “enhance the authenticity, accuracy, and integrity of the domain name registration information” and we agree. .cn is taking a really proactive step in making the internet a better place for us all.
The bad news is that only businesses are allowed to register .cn names. Individuals will no longer be able to buy .cn.
Virus killing company McAfee, has written an interesting paper on their findings on who is hiding behind what extensions: http://us.mcafee.com/en-us/local/docs/Mapping_Mal_Web.pdf
