Vance P. Hedderel, dotMobi’s Director of PR and Communications responded to speculation about .mobi’s viability vis-à-vis .TEL on the dotMobi blog this past Monday, stating that the purpose of the two domains is very different.
“Now, the .tel domain is launching … and people are asking, “Won’t .tel help me locate content that will work on a phone – mobile or not? Do I still need a .mobi domain?” … There is no overlap except in that they can easily work together to make content creation a bit easier.”
The .mobi domain was designed to locate mobile content in the same way .ca locates Canadian content or .museum helps users recognize museum-related content. While a business would use mycompany.tel to join a global online directory that makes its contact information accessible from any Internet enabled device, a mycompany.mobi allows customers know you have a website designed especially for mobile users to meet a specific need.
While .tel does provide a mobile presence, it’s strictly for mobile content. For many companies it makes sense to post rich mobile content – examples that come to mind are restaurant take-out menus, or city information.
When used together, .tel and .mobi can provide accessibility as well as rich content for people on the move. For the minimal capital it requires, it seems like a smart investment.
