Recognizing and celebrating the contributions of BC’s best small businesses

Winners of the 10th annual Successful You Awards were announced last
night at an event at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver. This contest recognizes the importance of BC entrepreneurs and their contribution to their local communities and around the world. There were
about 450 people from the BC business community last night, a number that keeps increasing yearly!

The formal part of the event was when Small
Business BC recognized the achievements of 30 finalists (1 winner was
chosen out of 5 finalists in 6 categories).

This years winners were:

Best Concept: Western Industrial Solutions
Best Employer: Chris’ Signs and Lighting Service
Best Green Business: Gibson’s Recycling Depot
Best Online Marketer: ethicalDeal
Best Community Impact: LunaPads International
Best Company: Restoring Data

Webnames.ca Co-Founder, Cybele Negris was once again a Judge at this great event. She had the opportunity to review the applications for the
Best Online Marketer category and watched the pitches of the five finalist
companies. She was impressed by the innovation, dedication and passion
each of the CEO’s had for their companies.

Over
1 million people are employed by small businesses in British Columbia
and 98% of all businesses in BC are considered Small Businesses (defined
as 50 employees or less).

2012 BCIC – New Ventures BC Competition Winners Announced

As one of the sponsors of the BCIC – New Ventures Competition, everyone at Webnames.ca would like to congratulate the winners of the 12th annual BCIC – New Ventures Competition that was held on September 26, 2012.The competition lasted for 6 months, with over 140 companies vying for the top prize. MyBestHelper offers an innovative online solution to finding childcare: families can find, book and pay trustworthy child caregivers for a flat fee.

$20,000 BC Bioenergy Network prize – Mazza Innovation Ltd
Mazza Innovation are developers of pressurized low polarity water (PLPW) extraction technology, used to extract high-value phytochemicals from plants which can be incorporated into products such as foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

$15,000 Vancity Social Venture prize – Twothirds Water Inc
Twothirds Water is a group of engineers and entrepreneurs who develop and market innovative water treatment products in developing countries.

All finalists were coached and mentored by the BCIC, who aims to assist small companies grow and and contribute to the B.C. economy.

CIRA Reveals the 2012 .CA Impact Award Winners!

CIRA hosted the second annual .CA Impact Awards and officially announced the winners at the Mesh Conference in Toronto on Tuesday. The .CA Impact Awards find people and organizations that use their .CA sites to make a difference in their community.

Organizations can enter into any four categories: Public Sector and Not-for-Profit, eLearning, Small Business, and Applications. Each winner receives $5,000 as well as national recognition.

The winners for 2012, by category are:

Public Sector and Not-for-Profit: Better Together
Better Together is a BC provincial initiative whose goal is to help Canadians experience the joys of eating together–whether in their family or with other groups of people.

eLearning: Vancouver Animation School
Vancouver Animation School is a leading educational Canadian institution offering entry and advanced programs for the Animation, Film and Game Industries.

Small Business: Condobox
Condobox is an interior design firm specializing in custom furniture and full interior packages for condo dwellers. Their charity, The Openbox Foundation, takes old furniture donations and provides them to needy individuals.

Applications: In Situ Audio Services
In Situ Audio Services (ISAS) is an eyes-free smartphone application designed to give blind users a better sense of their surroundings as they walk down the street.

B.C.’s Most Small Business Friendly Community Award- Is Your Community Small Business Friendly?

As a member of the board of BC’s Small Business Roundtable, I’m delighted to announce that eight communities who champion small businesses will be celebrated for the second annual B.C.’s Most Small Business Friendly Community Award. The award is organized by the Roundtable which is Co-chaired by Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell and Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger. The roundtable consults with the small business community and provides recommendations to government on issues, strategies and potential actions to support B.C.’s small businesses.

Winners of the award will be the community which best demonstrate the following achievements:

•    Reducing regulatory barriers.
•    Enhancing small business competitiveness.
•    Recognizing small business’ contribution to their community.
•    Supporting climate action initiatives, which benefit small business.

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, June 30, 2012. Up to three finalists per region will be chosen by August 2012 and winners announced in October during Small Business Month.

Last year’s Most Small Business Friendly Community award winners were Kamloops, Ladysmith, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, Rossland and Surrey

Recognizing and celebrating the contributions of BC’s best small businesses

Winners of the 9th annual Successful You Awards were announced last night at an event at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver. There were about 400 people from the BC business community with former Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden as keynote speaker. He gave a thoroughly entertaining speech about how much things had changed from 1988 when he started to 2008 when he retired. He has since become an entrepreneur with a successful development company with his brother and has started his Club 16 Trevor Linden fitness studios with a new one launching this month at the Vancouver Convention Centre. He admitted that this is his “freak out month.”

The formal part of the event was when Small Business BC recognized the achievements of 30 finalists (1 winner was chosen out of 5 finalists in 6 categories).

Best Concept: EightSix Network
Best Employer: Eclipse Awards
Best Green Business: Pemberton Valley Lodge
Best Online Marketer: Masc

BCIC-New Ventures Regional Competition: And the Winners Are…

As sponsor of the BCIC-New Ventures Regional Competition, everyone at Webnames.ca would like to congratulate the winners of the 2010 competition. Winners are selected by the competition’s expert panel of judges, who base their decision on which company has the most potential for success.

$10,000 BCIC Third prize: MemoryLeaf Media Inc. (Kamloops, BC)
MemoryLeaf’s online memorial service, created by Jonathan Bowers whose family runs a local funeral home, lets users create a lasting legacy for their loved ones through photos, videos and stories. The service, arranged through local funeral service providers, also offers professionally developed resources to help answer questions about the grieving process.

Over 100 people attended the awards ceremony in Kelowna on February 24, 2011.
