The Encyclopedia of Business Clichés

cliche

You’ve probably heard words like “paradigm” and “synergy” bandied about, but wondered what they really mean. It’s hard to avoid clichés when you are writing about your business, as many of them creep into business lingo until they become standard words. Leave it to Seth Godin to start the encyclopedia of business clichés. When you see the list of them all together it’s quite hilarious, and I’m sure I have used a few of them myself (it’s hard to write about technology and not use words like “robust” and “scalability” every once and awhile) but I will definitely keep this list at hand next time I’m writing, and you might want to too.

Here are a few of the gems on Godin’s list:

Thinking outside of the box
Low-hanging fruit
Maximize leverage
Push the envelope
Win-win situation
Bring our ‘A’ game
Let’s get granular
Let’s hit the ground running
Actionable
The iPod of ___insert industry___

Check out the rest of the list, there are many more you have probably heard before, and a few that may leave you scratching your head – I’d never heard of “rightsizing”. You can even add your own favourites if you’re feeling so inclined.
