the world with over 208 game developers participating in the event. The entirety of the 2012 Global Game
Jam produced over 2,209 games from over 10,684 participants in 242
locations from 47 countries.

Following the success of the 2012 GGJ Vancouver, this year’s turn out is expected to be even larger and proper arrangements are being made to accommodate local game developers and volunteers for the event.

What is Global Game Jam?

The Global Game Jam is an event inspired by the Nordic Game Jam. The GGJ occurs simultaneously in different locations across the globe. The goal of the event is to bring together local game developers and inspire collaboration, creativity and innovation. Each game jam is a site in a local city or country, where various game developers gather and form teams based on gaming ideas and compete against other game jam sites. With their teams, the game developers attempt to create games (based on their concept and a general GGJ theme) over the course of a single weekend. After 48 hours are up, the games are presented to their peers and the entire global gaming community.

Global Game Jam Vancouver

The previous Global Game Jam Vancouver brought in over 208 game developers to work on various games on the campus of the University of British Columbia. Global Game Jam Vancouver helped inspire the creation of numerous independent (or “indie”) games from all over Vancouver. The event is certainly an enlightening experience for all professional, amateur and aspiring game developers in Vancouver. Starting from a blank slate to creating an actual working video game over the course of a weekend requires a lot of dedication and collaboration among the teams. Each individual game-developer will have a different experience, which is why a lot of past participants recommend being involved in the game development process in order to truly comprehend the event. Through their collaborative efforts with their teams within the game jam, each individual game developer receives a different experience from the event. Each individual leaves with more than just new friends and connections, but also gains added knowledge and experience from game development professionals in the industry.

Through the promotion of collaboration, experimentation and innovation, Global Game Jam Vancouver acts as incubator for concepts and ideas that can inspire future local game developers to create games that can potentially revolutionize the industry.
